Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to operate electric forklifts is supplied by huge industrial batteries that need to be charged frequently and maintained correctly. Safety procedures should be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is very essential to check fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is vital for workers working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG comprise goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect skin and clothes from other residue or leaked acid is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station must be situated near the charging area. The path to the station must not be blocked and an employee who is injured must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging area in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger must be at the same amperage. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While near a battery and charging area, open flames are not allowed. Never permit objects like for instance matches or lighters to be used when someone is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be well ventilated. The recharging method can release gas. These gases are both explosive and toxic.
