There are 2 types of lift trucks, based whether or not they run on gas or electricity:



Internal Combustion Lift trucks: The IC forklift would run on fuels such as gas, liquid propane, diesel or compressed natural gas or CNG. Electric Forklifts: Electric lift trucks take batteries which require regular charging. As these units do not burn any fuel, there are no emissions polluting the air with these equipments. They are the best alternative for warehouses and indoor use. Also, lift trucks that run on electricity do not need any fuel storage units and they are a lot quieter to run than other models. One of the disadvantages of electric powered units is that they can not carry loads over 15,000 pounds and hence, have a slower acceleration compared to the models which use gasoline.
